Tokyo

The view from the Tokyo municipal building is outstanding and free! They have 45th floor observation deck in two towers, offering panoramic views of the metropolitan area of 30 million people. This is a must-see for any Tokyo visitor. Did I mention it was free?

A few totally random things we've learned about Tokyo:
1) public restrooms are abundant and fairly clean.
2) trash cans are non-existent. Not in train stations, not in street corners, not anywhere. If you generate trash, plan on packing it with you back to the hotel. Interestingly, litter is virtually non-existent too. The streets are amazingly clean.
3) many counter cafes work like this: there's a ticket machine outside or in the corner. You decide what you want, put your money in the machine, and select your menu choice. It spits out a ticket, which you give to a hostess, and then they make and deliver your food.
4) people don't chow down as they're walking down the street. You sit down at a restaurant or you take it with you home/to the office etc. That probably keeps the litter down, but isn't super practical for hungry tourists who just want a snack!
