Shinkansen

Our first and last trains of the day were Japan's famous "bullet trains," the Shinkansen. Traveling up to 175 MPH on our trips, they are quiet and comfortable. Today's journey started in Tokyo and ended in Kyoto, with a major side trip along the way.

Santa Ornament Tree

Yes, that's a Christmas tree made entirely from Santa Claus ornaments. Seen at Tokyo Midtown.

Soy Milk

Regular milk and I (Devin) don't get along so I get soy milk. Starbucks employees in the U.S. are pretty good about using soy milk when I ask for it but they aren't as conscientious as in Japan where you have to trade a soy milk card for your drink to ensure the barista used the correct milk.

Mt. Fugi

Here's a panoramic view of Mt. Fuji from Ōwakudani, a stop on the cable cars from Sōunzan to Togendai/Lake Ashino. 

Black Eggs

One of the big draws to the Hakone area is the natural hot springs that are everywhere, undoubtedly due to the nearby volcano, Mt. Fuji. There was steam pouring out of the mountains and it's used for many purposes, one of which is super touristy (but super popular), and that's for boiling eggs. These sulfuric baths are perfect for hard-boiling eggs and they sell them to many an egg-loving tourist. When the eggs are boiled in the sulfuric bath, the shell turns black while the inside is regular. 

In this picture, Denis isn't so sure the smell is worth standing around. Phew!

Crying Panda, Hurt His Hand

I like the way the Japanese illustrate rules and other various posters. This panda super hero is crying because he got his hands caught in the closing subway door. Obviously he got too close!

Gingko Trees

The sidewalk in not painted yellow. That is the mass of fallen Gingko leaves!
