One of the big draws to the Hakone area is the natural hot springs that are everywhere, undoubtedly due to the nearby volcano, Mt. Fuji. There was steam pouring out of the mountains and it's used for many purposes, one of which is super touristy (but super popular), and that's for boiling eggs. These sulfuric baths are perfect for hard-boiling eggs and they sell them to many an egg-loving tourist. When the eggs are boiled in the sulfuric bath, the shell turns black while the inside is regular.
In this picture, Denis isn't so sure the smell is worth standing around. Phew!
